If you have a car that you want to use on the road, then auto insurance is just one of things that you have to pay for, and it’s not cheap. The amount you pay for your auto insurance varies depending on the type of coverage you want and the type of vehicle that you drive but here’s a few things you can do to try to find cheaper insurance.
Always be on the lookout
Special offers and auto insurance don’t normally run in the same sentence but there are some great auto insurance offers in the market that you can take advantage of. Here are some examples:
- Student – discount for being a student
- Good grades – discount for being a student and performing well
- Multi Vehicle – discount for insuring more than one vehicle
Can you combine an existing policy?
Combining two different types of insurance policies with the same provider is a great way to save some dollars. Check to see if your home insurance provider offers auto insurance, and what sort of discount you would get if you combine the two.
Try to avoid paying monthly
Paying for your auto insurance yearly rather than monthly is a sure fire way to save money. Many insurance providers offer great discounts for paying using a one-off payment, but obviously you need to have the funds available to be able to pay for your insurance in this manner.
Keep a good credit record
Many people don’t think about their credit record when applying for a new insurance policy, however, when you actually request a quote, most insurance providers will perform a credit check against your name. Keeping a good, clean credit record means that you will appear more reliable to the provider and you may get a discount based on that fact.
Higher deductibles
In the event that you actually have an automobile accident your deductible is the amount you have to pay the insurance provider before your policy becomes active. The higher the amount of your deductibles the higher the discount your provider will be prepared to offer you. By including higher deductibles you can typically save up to 10%, remember though to only increase the deductibles to an affordable level, as you will have to provide the insurance provider with the amount to make a claim.
Have you checked the extras the policy offers?
When purchasing auto insurance there will often be extras added to your basic policy, for example, this could be health or breakdown coverage. Make sure you want these add-ons before committing to purchasing as they could just bump up your overall cost.
Search as much as you can
Searching as much as you can ensures you get the best view of the insurance options available to you, and the more prices you compare, the more chance you have of finding the cheapest price. Makes sense right? But don’t try to search through all insurance companies manually; you should use a price comparison website to search as they will compare most of the insurance providers for you, basically doing the hard work so you don’t have to.
