compost Today’s Throwaways Are Tomorrow’s Tools

As you have seen in some of my earlier posts, this is the first year I have experimented with container gardening. I must say I am quite excited to see what kind of harvest I get. I have so enjoyed checking in on my plants every day to see how much more they have grown. In my gardening endevours, I have come accross a few recyclable ideas that have not only made this hobby easier but also cheaper.

1. Food Waste: All food waste can be composted with the exception of meat and dairy. Compost helps add nutrients to your soil giving your plants are more fertile environment to grow in. We have three compost bins in use at any given time. While one or two are still composting, we can use the finished soil from the other to line our pots.

2. Old carpets or cardboard boxes: These are useful for preventing early spring weeds. Just drape them over your plants in the fall and secure them with rocks or logs. Then just remove them in early spring and viola, no weeds.

3. Paint trays: Keep old roller painting trays and similar containers for seed trays. Punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Add a little fine gravel before filling with seed compost.

4. Yogurt containers: All plastic containers can be washed and saved for re-potting seedlings. Make a hole in the bottom of each and add a little fine gravel before filling with compost or soil. This is a green way to start your seeds every spring.

5. Glass jars: Glass jars with sealable lids are excellent for storing seeds, beans and peas for planting next year. Make sure they are washed and dried thoroughly. You don’t want any moisture present. Then wrap them with paper to prevent the seeds from being damaged by light.

Stay on the look out for other tools for the garden from today’s throwaways. You might just be surprised at what you’ll find.

So have you come up with any creative uses for recycled goods? How has your garden been progressing this year?
