One of the areas I like to help people out with here at Prairie Eco-Thrifter is living healthy. I try to share the tips that I have found help me eat well and be active without too much difficulty. Here are a few tricks I have found work well for getting my daily produce requirements.
1. Breakfast smoothies. All you have to do is throw some fruits, low-fat yogurt and ice in a blender. You may also want to add a scoop of protein powder in there for good measure. I find vanilla flavour works the best. Then, just blend for a few seconds and you have the perfect breakfast ready to go.
2. Dried fruit and nuts. They make an excellent snack mid morning or mid afternoon. I find they give me the energy boost I need and prevent me from snacking on other less healthy options, such as a bagel or doughnut.
3. Add some fruits and vegetables to your sandwiches. You can add banana, sliced apples or strawberry slices to a peanut butter sandwich or you can top a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.
4. Salads. At dinner, set out a variety of chopped vegetables, some cheese and croutons, along with the lettuce and let everybody create their own perfect salad.
5. Fresh juices. Keep an assortment of fruit and vegetable juices in the fridge and encourage everyone to drink them as a snack. Make sure you buy fresh, sugar free juices. Any other variety isn’t any better for you than pop. I find carrot juice works great, especially as an addition to my morninng smoothies.
6. Frozen yogurt. Put a small scoop of frozen yogurt in a bowl and top it with lots of fresh or frozen fruit and salt free nuts.
7. Pack fruits and vegetables as snacks. You can cut apples into slices and top them with peanut butter or cheese. I do this at work and it tastes great. I get a protein boost and the energy I need to get through to lunch. Cube cheese and serve with grapes. Cut up some fresh veggies like carrots.
8. Try something new. Pick something exotic that you have never tried like artichokes, plantains, papaya, mango, star fruit, or anything else you can find in the produce department of your local store. It is fun to experiment and you might just find a new snack that you can’t live without.
9. Have stock. Make sure that you always have fresh fruit and veggies available. This way when the munchies occur, healthy options are there for the picking.
I hope you have found these tips helpful and that you are one step closer to eating healthier. I can say they have worked well for us.
