Most of us want nothing more than to be able to efficiently manage our money. After all, the money we have is hard earned and valuable. This is where a budget comes into play. A budget, when implemented properly, should help you see where your money is going, get more out of every buck, and help you save for the future. Here are 4 secrets that we as a couple have found work well for us in keeping ourselves on track.
Secret 1. Set a goal. Sit back and reallyl think about What you want to achieve? Do you want to put an amount aside for a big purchase such as an appliance, a family vacation or a new car? Or do you want to put money into a huge investment? By setting a goal you will be able to tailor your budget to best serve your interests.
Secret 2. Record your purchases. Make a note of every dollar you spend. This would include bills, major but regular purchases (like grocery costs), and everyday miscellaneous purchases (books, magazines). By recording everything you will be able to determine which areas your money is going to and whether they are part of your goal. Once you’ve identified these regular expenditures, think about which ones you can eliminate or modify. For example, are you a Starbucks guru? How much do you spend on your morning java? Did you know that those $2 small purchases can accumulate to multiple thousands of dollars a year? If you can eliminate those small and unnecessary expenditures, you could put that money aside and use it for something that you really need, like that new car. You honestly will be amazed at the total amount you will have saved in just one year by making this change.
Secret 3. Pay at least the minimum on all of your debts. Save yourself from paying huge interest fees. That is money you will never see again nor is it represented by anything your have done or own. You are literally just paying someone else's paycheck. If you have extra cash at the end of the month that is not reserved for something else, then you also have the option of making an additional payment on your biggest debt which in turn lowers your interest payments. By doing this progressively, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ll pay off.
Secret 4. Keep track of what you earn and what you spend. There are many computer programs that let you do this easily but you can also use a plain old paper, pen, and binder. We use Quicken but there are many more out there to try. Most importantly, use a system that works best for you. This will help you see month to month where you are at and if you are staying on track with your budget or if you need to make adjustments.
Give these 4 secrets a try if budgeting has been a challenge for you. I can guarantee they will make lead to a positive outcome.
