Many of us, at different points of our life, face large surges of situations that overwhelm us. Maybe it is a move, out of town guests, an illness in the family, or a renovation project.

We can however, use these surges as an opportunity to embrace life as a family unit and become closer in getting through them. Here are some tips on how to get through those times effectively.

Choose your absolutes. Figure out what tasks need to be done no matter what and make them your priority. Don't worry about the things that are not on that list.

Be willing to adjust. If something is not essential, take a break from it. Refocus your energies on the situation at hand and resume those activities once things have once again normalized.

Be adaptable. Change your routine. Try something different. Do what you can to eliminate any extra stress. It is ok to change.

Priorize. Tackle your highest priority first thing in the morning, when you are fresh and focused. Don't wait until later in the day when other items may have been piled on your plate.

Watch for the moral. Often, in every challenge we face, there is a 'moral of the story' to be learned. Talk about the situation as a family. Hear each others feelings and discuss what you are learning about yourselves.

Ask for help. It is not always easy to ask for help, but in some cases it is a must. In fact, many people in your life would love to be asked. They would like to feel useful in helping you get through whatever situation you are dealing with at the moment. Let them do it. Don't say no.

Look after yourself. Make sure that everyone in the family including yourself says healthy. Eat well, get enough sleep, and exercise. This will not only keep you strong physically, but it will also renew you mentally so you can embrace your current challenge and beat it.

Enjoy yourself. Make sure to dedicate some down time and relax. Go to a museum or a movie. Make sure you give yourself the opportunity to laugh and let go. This will help you regroup and recharge.

Keep daily tasks easy. Limit any extra steps if you can in all of your daily activities. Make smoothies instead of slicing veggies and fruit. Make omlettes, beans and rice, or other simple dishes as your main meals. Work as a family unit to get the chores done, such as cleaning the bathroom or dusting.

Keep your outlook. Challenges come and go in life. Don't let them take over who you are. Make sure to reinforce to one another that they are loved and that you can get through these surges together. Remember the big picture and what your goals are. This will help you to look forward and not dwell on the current moment.

When surges have come into your life, what have you found gets you through? Please share.
