Whether you are a mom, dad, spouse, or single, the task of cleaning the house can be overwhelming. Like many of us, we are committed to numerous activities during the week and probably find yourself bogged down with 5 hours of cleaning to squeeze in somewhere. Well here is a tip that I have found to work great and minimize my stress…a cleaning schedule.
How to make one
- Write down all of the cleaning tasks that you need to do. For example: bathrooms, floors, dusting, etc.
- Then next to each one, write down how many times a week you need to do each task. In our house we do our floors twice a week because lots of dirt gets tracked in.
- Then take your normal schedule for the week and write down one cleaning task for each day. If you have more than 7, start over again at the beginning of the week. Here is an example:
My husband and I have done this and as a team we never spend more than 1 hour of cleaning on any given day. By spreading the tasks out evenly throughout the week our stress has gone way down. We even have time still most evenings to sit down and relax.
Please give this a shot. I promise you will find yourself having a healthier and less stressful relationship with cleaning.

We have a slightly different way to split up our chores in the house. Mrs. SPF does use a schedule such as you show here for her chores. Mine tend to be a bit more as-needed (snow shovelling, yard work, fix this that the other thing, work on reno project a-z and a lot of our financial chores (budget, long term planning, stock analysis + research of things we’re looking at possibly buying). We’re quite balanced but Mrs. SPF finds having a schedule invaluable.
@ SPF It is nice to hear that you two share the duties. It works so much better when you have a team approaching the to do’s. We use a schedule in our house and we also find it invaluable.
