What would you say if you could get your exercise in at any time, in any place, at no cost and with no equipment? Most of us would say ‘sign me up’. Well, what am I referring too? Running.
Now some of us love running and some of us hate it and some of us are too scared to try it, but I can assure you running really is one of the best techniques around. Why? F.E.V.E.R.
F-Frugal
Running is almost free. All you need are shorts/pants, a shirt, and some sneakers which is a staple closet item for any of us. You don’t have to pay for a membership to participate and you don’t have to drive anywhere to do it.
E-Effective
Running is a very effective cardiovascular workout. It burns more calories than any other exercise (with the exception of cross country skiing) which helps to maintain or lose weight. It lowers cholesterol, prevents bone and muscle loss, minimizes risks for hypertension and diabetes, and also boosts the immune system.
V-Versatile
Running is the most versatile exercise you can do. It doesn’t matter what city you live in or travel to, you can run there. All you need are your clothes and shoes. It can be done rain or shine, on snow or ice or even sand. It can be done in a group or solo for 10 minutes or 200 minutes. It can be done indoors or outdoors. Running can happen any time and any place.
E-Easy
Contrary to what some believe, running is easy. You don’t have to run fast or run for a long time to feel the benefits. You can run a long distance or a short distance and still make a difference to your health. There are many versions of training programs that can be accessed for free via the web and different ones appeal to different people, but I promise you anyone can start it and enjoy it. To read about different programs, check out this link: Running Programs. Just remember to start slow with whatever program you decide to try. Set yourself realistic step by step goals. Example: Aim to run 1/2 mile. Get comfortable with that and then increase the distance by no more than 10% a week.
R-Rewarding
Running is very rewarding. Not only does it provide real health benefits it also improves the soul and mind. Running builds confidence, determination and courage. Running can clear your head after a long day and motivate you for the next. Running inspires others to challenge themselves and set their own goals. Running can release tension and stress and refresh the mind.
So give running a try and experience the FEVER!! If you need help getting started, just ask.
