Well for my first post I figured I would share with you my latest discovery a.k.a. addiction….audiobooks. I must admit I have never been a good reader. Novels never really appealed to me. I would find my self either not getting into a story or falling asleep after a couple pages and never getting very far. In fact it is shameful, but I can count the number of books I have read, non academic of course, in my life so far on one hand; that is until now!
My amazing husband bought me an i-phone for Valentine’s day. I fell in love with it the first day, adding apps, adding photos and browsing all the features. Then one feature caught my eyes…audiobooks. I decided to check it out. Since I use the internet for everything in my life, I did my usual search to see what I could find on audiobooks. I came across numerous sites where audiobooks could be downloaded for a price. In most cases, a membership was required.
The one I decided to try is called audible, an affiliate of Amazon. There were different membership options to choose from but before signing up my frugal brain had to do some simple calculations. Here is what I figured out:
The average paper back novel costs $12-20.
The average cost of a hard cover is usually double that.
The average cost of a book on CD or tape is $30+. The larger the novel, the higher the price.
The average cost of an audiobook in mp4 format for my i-phone was $12. An instant savings. If I ‘read’ 12 novels in one year, I would spend $144 compared to $300 when I average the price of the others. That $150 extra almost paid for my i-phone.
After reviewing the numbers, I couldn’t help but sign up. Plus I realized bonus benefits. In an effort to be green and save money I have taken up the habit of walking to and from work. It takes me roughly 1/2 hr each way. With this discovery, I have been able to listen to a chapter or two each day on my walk to work. I have been enjoying it so much that I can’t wait to walk home so I can hear what happens next in whatever story I am reading.
Now some would argue that this isn’t ‘actual’ reading but for someone who rarely ever picked up a novel for leisure and has numerous time commitments, audiobooks have been the answer. It has been just under a month and I have already completed one book and have started my second. Stay tuned for author recommendations and book reviews.
Now I ask, will you give audiobooks a try?

When I used to commute long distances (1 hour or more), I would get audio books from the library. I really enjoyed Silence of the Lambs and Bonfires of the Vanities. We also took them on long car trips. Audio books are great, now there are more devices to use them.
@Krant. I used to walk to work and I would listen to an audio book on the way. It was a great way to get my reading done.
